Why Does My Cat Drink Water from the Faucet?

Have you ever wondered why cats have this strange obsession with drinking water directly from the tap? Today we tell you all about this mysterious feline habit.

  1. Stale water in the bowl: Often, the water in their bowls, especially in homes where it’s not changed frequently, can become unappealing, so they only drink the minimum needed. Sometimes, some cats even tap the bowl before drinking, to stir the water a bit.
  2. Genes: Wild cats only drink flowing water to avoid illnesses caused by bacteria in stagnant water. The same applies to our domesticated cats.
  3. Tap water is fresher: Generally, tap water is fresher. This is especially attractive during the hotter months, when the water in their bowls can warm up easily.
  4. Bowl placement: Is your bowl very close to the food or litter box? This might also make them less likely to drink from the bowl. In nature, felines move their prey away from where they drink, and this behavior is ingrained in our cats’ genes.

Do you have a little kitty that does the same?
